Back in April of this year, Jameson Williams heard his name called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as the 12th overall pick in the NFL Draft. His new home would be Detroit, Michigan, as he was selected by the Detroit Lions.
The Lions were eager to draft Jameson Williams, trading up in the draft to secure him. They traded the 32nd, 34th, and 66th picks to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for the 12th overall selection. Despite his outstanding junior season at Alabama—where he totaled 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns across 15 games, helping lead the team to a 13-win season and an SEC Championship—many questioned the Lions' decision due to concerns over his injury.
In the 2022 NCAA National Championship, Williams tore his ACL in the second quarter. This was a major setback for the star wide receiver, especially since his speed is one of his key assets.
The injury raised concerns among teams interested in drafting him, as they wondered whether he would retain his speed and elusiveness when he returned to the field. Those questions are about to be answered, as Williams is expected to make his NFL debut in Week 13, nearly a year after the injury, when the Lions take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This is great news for the Lions. Not only will their already explosive offense gain more firepower, but Williams’ presence will also make their rising star, Amon-Ra St. Brown, even more dominant.
With two talented receivers on the field, defenses won’t be able to focus solely on St. Brown. As a result, the addition of Williams might actually create more opportunities for Jared Goff to get the ball to St. Brown.
Is Jameson Williams the missing piece in an improbable Lions playoff run? Time will tell.
